Hello!

My name is Kennedy DeRaedt and I am a junior in advertising. I have wanted to do the Urbino program with Dennis Chamberlin since my freshman year. Who is Dennis? He is a professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, who also happens to be a Pulitzer Prize winner. When he talked about this program, I knew right away it was the journey I wanted to embark on. This program involves learning about photography and the Renaissance in none other than Urbino. Urbino is a walled city known for its rich history in the Renaissance.

I have always wanted to study abroad and travel the world and I am so excited to see what Italy has to offer. I would love to also explore the countries around Italy, such as Greece, Germany, Spain and more. I had the blessing of being able to go to Switzerland with my family over the summer and seeing that beautiful country made me even more excited about my decision to travel to Urbino.

With this blog I will document my journey and now, students who are thinking about studying abroad can read it to help their decision. One girl in a class I took did the Urbino program and I remember asking her so many questions about her time there. It was very helpful to hear about her experience and I would hope that my blog and social media posts could also show students my experience. (maybe it could even help them choose this program!)

This last semester, I was the photography director for SIR magazine and social media manager for Cardinal & Gold (a student-run ad agency), and I am hoping to stay just as busy abroad. Depending on the course load, I would like to also document my travels in a video form and in watercolor paintings. I did film my Switzerland journey, but it is quite a long video!

I cannot wait to board the plane and set off to Italy. It will be quite the adventure and I am looking forward to the lifelong memories I will make there. I am so glad I have the opportunity to share my journey with other students at Iowa State!

First mission: find the best coffee shop!

Signing off,

Kennedy
